Endodontics (Root Canal)
Root Canal Treatment in Hemel Hempstead
Endodontics, also known as root canal therapy, is the process of saving a diseased tooth in order to avoid extraction. Tooth loss can have a negative effect on your self-esteem, as it impacts your ability to eat, smile and speak as you used to. At Leverstock Green Dental Practice we have highly qualified dental clinicians who can alleviate your tooth pain and help you prevent the loss of your tooth.
How does it work?
When we perform a root canal, the first step is to gently remove the diseased pulp from the root of the tooth. This is done under local anaesthetic and you shouldn’t feel any pain. After removing the pulp, we will place a temporary filling in order to allow time to ensure that the infection is completely cleared. Finally, we replace the filling with a permanent one or, more often, a crown to reinforce the tooth. This is because the tooth no longer has a blood supply and can become brittle.

Endodontics FAQs
Contrary to popular myth, endodontic treatment is virtually painless. In fact, most patients report that root canals are no more uncomfortable than having a filling. They’re certainly preferable to living with the pain of an infected tooth and the ramifications of eventually having that tooth extracted.
Your tooth may be suffering from dental decay or it may be fractured. In either case, the pulp of the tooth has become infected and needs to be removed.
Normally just two, however each case is different and, depending on the complexity, you may need more. At the first appointment we will assess your condition and ensure there is sufficient tooth available to make treatment viable. During this first appointment the pulp is usually removed and any abscesses are drained, giving you immediate relief from pain. The second appointment will be to place the permanent restoration - either a filling or, more usually, a crown.
